Handmade: VR Tools for Creation

A human-centred research project examining barriers to adopting virtual reality as a medium for creative practice. Insights from creators informed educational resources, learner archetypes, and recommendations for supporting more accessible and engaging pathways into immersive content creation.

Methods: Qualitative Surveys ◦ Semi-structured Interviews ◦ Persona Development ◦ Thematic Analysis ◦ Game Jam Facilitation ◦ Experience Triage
Client: Masterpiece VR

Overview

DDeveloped in collaboration with Masterpiece Studio and the game:play Lab at OCAD University, this project explored how virtual reality could support more accessible approaches to 3D content creation. As demand for 3D content continued to grow across creative industries, the research examined whether VR-based creation tools could reduce some of the barriers associated with traditional 3D software. The project was conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic using online and hybrid research methods.

Using a mixed-methods approach, we combined surveys, participatory persona development, an online game jam, usability observations, and post-event interviews to better understand participants’ learning experiences and identify opportunities for improving the software’s usability.
